INDIANAPOLIS - Two-time defending U.S. Junior Amateur champion Stefanie Nation, Miami, and Chris Bolosan, Newport News, Va., lead after the first six semifinal games Thursday in the 2005 USA Junior Gold Bowling National Championships, a United States Bowling Congress Event, in Indianapolis.
Following Wednesday's action, the qualifying field was trimmed to the top 149 males and top 62 females (plus ties) for Thursday's semifinals, which consist of two six-game blocks at Woodland Bowl. After today's semifinal round, the top 16 males and top 16 females advance to the round-robin match play round Friday at Woodland Bowl.
Two-time defending U.S. Junior Amateur champion Nation, 21, continues to lead the female division with a 24-game total of 4,859 - a 202.46 average. Bryanna Caldwell, Tucson, Ariz., moved from eighth place to second with 4,733 pins after posting 1,256 in her six-game morning block, and Kayla Bandy jumped from 14th to third with 4,644 total pins.
Five-time Junior Gold participant Bolosan, 20, held his lead with 4,976 pins -- a 207.33 average -- after posting 1,195 in his six-game morning block. Ivan Miyasato, Aiea, Hawaii, moved from third to second place with 4,889, and David Lange, Stevensville, Mich., moved into third place from ninth by posting 1,253 in his morning block today, bringing his pin total to 4,854.
The six-game afternoon semifinal block is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. CDT, after which the field will be cut to the top 16 males and top 16 females.
The 2005 USA Junior Gold Bowling National Championships feature 1,476 of the best youth bowlers from across North America and U.S. military zones from around the world competing for more than $55,000 in scholarships, individual titles and berths on USBC Junior Team USA 2006. Each participant advanced to the national championships through local Junior Gold qualifying tournaments and leagues.
The top six finishers in each division - who are U.S. citizens - will earn berths on USBC Junior Team USA 2006. Additionally, the National Selection Committee will select two males and two females to USBC Junior Team USA 2006. Selections will be made from the pool of athletes who advance to match play competition.
USBC Junior Team USA will represent the United States in international competition in 2006. This team is designed to be part of a feeder system for the U.S. national amateur team, Team USA.
